On the 15th June 1519, Henry Fitzroy, Duke of Richmond and Somerset, was born. Even though we are not completely sure about this date, it is generally accepted to be Henry’s birthdate. Richmond was the acknowledged illegitimate son of Henry VIII and his mistress Elizabeth (Bessie) Blount.
Cardinal Wolsey has sent Bessie to reside at the prior’s house of the Priory of St Lawrence in Blackmore, before her pregnancy became visible. It is not known when Bessie gave birth to Richmond or when he was christened but one historian, Elizabeth Norton, argues the birth date. She wonders if he was actually born on 18th June, as Henry VIII chose 18th June 1525 to elevate his son to the peerage and 18th June 1524 to award Bessie and her husband with a royal grant. However, this is the traditional date that is said to be when he was born.
